Introduction:
Visual Basic is a Microsoft tool used for creation of windows based programs. Visual Basic is simple, flexible and powerful tool for development of GUI ( Graphical User Interface ) based applications. Visual Basic is an Event Driven programming language Visual Basic provides an IDE for creation, running and debugging Windows based programs.

In 1960 John Kemeny and Thomas Kurtz developed a language for understanding the primary purpose of programming. This language was called BASIC, which stand for Beginner's All-purpose Symbolic Instruction Code language.
In 1991 Microsoft corporation evolved the Visual Basic language from the BASIC language for development of Windows GUI programs. Since 1991, three Versions of Visual Basic have been released and the latest version is Visual Basic 6, which was released in September 1998.

Editions of Visual Basic:
Microsoft provides following three Editions of Visual Basic.
Learning Edition:
This edition comes into existence with all tools, which are enough for the development of a window based application.
Professional Edition:
This Edition comes into existence with all basic tools and with some advanced features as follows.
- Development of ActiveX controls.
- Development of internet controls.
Enterprise Edition:
This edition is advanced off all editions. This edition covers all features of Professional edition. Some other advanced features are.
- Visual Source Safe Tool.
- Component Manager.
