Interfaces for Visual Basic Applications
Visual Basic Application can be created into two main interfaces
Single Document Interface ( SDI ):
The application which is created in SDI, consists of series of independent Forms each of these Forms is displayed separately on the screen and is moved, maximized or minimized separately from any other form.
The application which is created in MDI, also consists of series of independent Forms. Among these forms, one form is considered as parent Form and other Forms can be child Forms. In MDI application you can organize all child Forms or organize the entire group of Forms e.g. Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel are MDI applications.
MDI Parent Form works as a container for all child Forms of the application. The MDI parent Form has a number of characteristics that define its behavior.
Note:
To make a Form as child Form in MDI application sat the MDIChild property of each Form to true.

Characteristic Of MDI Parent Forms:
MDI Parent Form works as a container for all child Forms of the application. The MDI parent Form has a number of characteristics that define its behavior.
- One application can have only and only one MDI Form.
- The MDI Form can contain only those controls that support Align property such as Toolbar or Picture Box etc.
- MDI parent window and all child Forms are represented by a single icon on the window taskbar.
- If a menu is defined for child Form, the menu is displayed in the parent Form's menu bar. if a menu is defined for the parent Form, it is not shown at all if a child Form that has its own menu in the active Form.
Characteristic Of MDI child Forms:
The MDI child Form has a number of characteristics that define its behavior.
- Each child Form is displayed within the confines of the Parent Form i.e. Child Form cannot be moved outside the boundaries of MDI Parent form.
- When a child Form is minimized, its icon is displayed in the parent window not on the windows taskbar.
- When a child Form is maximized, it fills the entire inner area of Parent Form.
- When one child Form is maximized, all other child Forms are maximized.
